Wimbledon
July 3, 2024 - July 16, 2024

Wimbledon, officially known as The Championships, Wimbledon, is the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament. Held annually at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877, it is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, alongside the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only Major still played on grass, the game’s original surface, which gives the event a unique tradition and honor.
Scheduled over two weeks in late June and early July, Wimbledon concludes with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Finals. The tournament is renowned for its strict dress code for competitors and its royal patronage, with the Royal Family frequently in attendance. Wimbledon’s distinctive customs include the absence of commercial advertising around the courts and the consumption of strawberries and cream by spectators, a tradition that has become synonymous with the British summer.
Wimbledon consists of five main events, four junior events, and seven invitation events, with men’s (singles and doubles), women’s (singles and doubles), mixed doubles, boys’ and girls’ (singles and doubles), and wheelchair players competing. The tournament is famous for its Centre Court, known for the iconic retractable roof installed in 2009 to prevent rain delays, and the prestigious No.1 Court, both of which have witnessed countless memorable moments in tennis history.
The tournament employs a unique seeding system that considers players’ grass-court performance, in addition to their world ranking, which adds an extra layer of strategy to the competition. Wimbledon’s honor roll features some of the greatest names in tennis, with players like Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, and Pete Sampras among its champions, underscoring the tournament’s status as a career-defining event for tennis professionals.
Wimbledon is not just a sporting event; it’s a cultural institution that embodies the enduring appeal of tennis. Its traditions, prestige, and the high level of competition make it a highlight of the international sports calendar, attracting a global audience of millions. Beyond the on-court action, Wimbledon’s impact extends into the community through the Wimbledon Foundation, which aims to use the resources and heritage of the Championships to change people’s lives.
